Here are Some Commonly Asked Questions
Is there an age requirement to rent from you?
We prefer to work with customers who are 25 years and above because of our insurance policy restrictions. However, depending on your circumstances, whenever possible, we always strive to be flexible.
In case you are below twenty-five, try checking in with your insurer to determine if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can call us.
Are your roof top tents family friendly?
Certainly! Please note that with our rooftop camping vehicles you would need to climb a small ladder. If this sounds like a concern, we also offer an extra camping tent with all of our packages which you can easily set up on the ground. This could be more suitable for both you and your little ones.
How many people can your camper vehicles fit?
We are able to accommodate three individuals at most, although if there are more in your party, we do provide an additional tent, too. With this, we are able to allow for as much as 5 people. Each of our trucks has 5 seatbelts.
What about surfboards?
Yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards & boogie boards and fins upon request for a small fee. Simply tell us in advance if you would like to rent one, so that we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.
Can we receive a guidebook or a map with the best areas to explore on Kauai?
Yes, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best spots to see and camp out on Kauai.
Finest Locations For Camping Out On Kauai & Details About Camping Permits
Am I able to head to any beach for camping?
You can drive up to any beach, but you can only put up your camp in designated camping sites. This is the usual practice here on Kauai. We will supply you with a list of the best locations to check out and to camp in. Please remember that driving on the beaches isn’t permitted on Kauai.
Is “wild camping” allowed or are we just able to visit official camping sites? If so, what is the fee?
No, wild camping isn’t permitted on the island of Kauai. You should only go camping in specified locations with a current camping permit. The charge is roughly $3 per night stay in the majority of Kauai county parks, but private camping grounds may be a little more. The good thing about these campgrounds is that you have full access to amenities, like showers, bathrooms and picnic tables. Please note that if you opt to camp on the county campgrounds, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.

Before our arrival in Kauai, do we have to get a Kauai camping permit?
It is definitely a good idea to get your Kauai camping license prior to your journey. For most private campgrounds, which we always recommend first, you can get your licenses on the internet and also in person in the respective office.
If you decide to camp at a county campground and use a ground tent, you may obtain permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” web page.
Non-residents must pay three dollars per night beforehand. Payment methods accepted with this particular application are cashier’s checks and also money orders. Nevertheless, it’s not absolutely necessary to reserve your camping permits before your planned arrival. You can also get them at the designated permit offices on the island, which is typically easier.
How long does it take to get the camping permits?
Whether you decide to camp at a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you choose to go to a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it might take quite a while to get your permits. Permits can be obtained at the license offices on Kauai upon arrival; in-person permits are issued right away.

Our Happy Clients!
Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.
Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time

Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.
We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
The BEST way to experience the beautiful garden island! Not only a great service–transportation doubling as your lodging–but wonderful and warm hosts. Jonathan and Jamie were so kind and helpful. An absolutely wonderful trip to Kauai–thank you both!
