Commonly Asked Questions
Is there an age requirement to rent from you?
We prefer to do business with clients who are actually twenty-five years and above due to our insurance coverage restrictions. Having said that, based upon your situation, whenever we can, we try to be accommodating.
In case you are younger than 25 years, try contacting your insurer to find out if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can contact us.
Are your rooftop tents kids friendly?
Certainly! Please note that with our rooftop campers you would need to climb up one small ladder. If this is a concern, we provide an extra camping tent with all of our packages which you can put up on the ground next to your camping vehicle. This could be much more comfortable for both you as well as your kids.
What is the maximum capacity of your vehicles?
We can fit three people maximum, although if there are more within your party, we do offer an additional camping tent, too. With this, we can easily allow for up to 5 individuals. Each of our vehicles has 5 seatbelts.
Are you offering surfboards?
Certainly, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards and boogie boards and also fins on request for a fee. Just let us know up-front if you want to rent one, so that we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.
Do we get a travel guide or even a map with the best beaches & hiking trails to visit on Kauai?
Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best places to check out and go camping on Kauai.
Best Places For Camping On Kauai & Specifics About Camping Permits
Am I able to visit any beach front to camp?
You could go to any beach, but you should only put up your camp in designated camping sites. This is the typical practice here on Kauai. We will provide you with a list of the best locations to check out and also to go camping. Please be aware that driving a vehicle on the beaches is not allowed on Kauai.
Is “wild camping” allowed or can we just go to designated camping grounds? If so, how much does it cost?
No, wild camping isn’t permitted on the island of Kauai. You can only camp in specified locations with a valid camping permit. The fee is approximately $3 per night stay in many Kauai county parks, though private campgrounds may be a little more. The good thing about these campgrounds is that you have total access to amenities, like showers, restrooms and picnic tables. Please be aware that if you decide to camp on the county campsites, you are only allowed to set up the ground tent.

Before our arrival in Kauai, do we need to get a Kauai camping permit?
It’s a better to organize your Kauai camping permits prior to your arrival. For most private campsites, which we always recommend first, you may secure your licenses online and also in person in the respective office.
If you decide to stay at a county campsite and use a ground tent, you can ask for permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” web page.
In advance, the charges are $3 per night for non-residents of Hawaii. Accepted payment methods with this particular application are money orders and cashier’s checks. However, you don’t necessarily have to book your camping licenses prior to your arrival. You can also get them at the different permit offices in Kauai, which is usually easier.
How much time does it take to get the camping permits?
No matter if you choose to stay at a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you choose to camp at a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it can take quite a while to receive your permits. You might choose to receive your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the different permit offices on Kauai; in-person you will get them on the spot.
