You can drive up to any beach, however, you should only put up your camp in designated camping sites. This is the typical practice here on Kauai. We’ll provide you with a list of the ideal locations to check out and to camp in. Please remember that driving on the beaches is not permitted on Kauai.

Is “wild camping” allowed or are we only able to go to official camping grounds? If so, how much is the charge?

No, wild camping is not permitted in Kauai. You can only camp in specific areas with secured camping permits. The fee is approximately $3 per night stay in most Kauai county parks, though private camp sites could be a bit more. The good thing about these camping grounds is that you will have complete access to amenities, such as showers, bathrooms & picnic kitchen tables. Please keep in mind that if you choose to camp on the county campsites, you are only permitted to use the ground tent.

Do we have to get Kauai camping permits before we arrive in Kauai?

It’s a better to organize your Kauai camping license before your arrival. For the majority of private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you can secure your licenses online and also in person in the respective office.
