Frequently Asked Questions
Are there any age restrictions to rent from you?
We prefer to do business with customers who are 25 years and above due to our insurance policy restrictions. Nevertheless, based upon your needs, whenever we can, we strive to be flexible.
If you are below 25 years, try checking with your insurance provider to find out whether you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can call us.
Are your rooftop tents kids friendly?
Certainly! Please note that using our rooftop camping vehicles you will need to climb up a small ladder. If this sounds like a concern, we offer an additional tent with all of our packages which you can set up on the ground next to the camper truck. This can be much more comfortable for you as well as your little ones.
How many people can your camper trucks fit?
We can accommodate 3 individuals maximum, although if there are more within your party, we do provide an extra tent, as well. With this, we can easily allow for as much as five people. Each of our trucks has 5 seatbelts.
Are you offering surfboards?
Absolutely yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards & boogie boards and fins on request for a small fee. Simply inform us beforehand if you would like to rent one, so we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.
Do we receive a guidebook or a map with the greatest areas to visit on Kauai?
Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best spots to visit & camp out on Kauai.
Best Places For Camping Outdoors On Kauai & Camping Permits FAQ
Am I able to visit any beach to camp?
You could drive up to any beach, nevertheless, you should only put up your camp in official camping grounds. This is the typical practice here on Kauai. We will supply you with a list of the greatest places to check out and also to go camping. Please remember that driving on the beaches is not allowed on Kauai.
Are we permitted to camp in the wild or are we only able to visit designated camping sites? If so, what is the fee?
No, wild camping isn’t permitted in Kauai. You may only camp in designated areas with secured camping permits. The fee is around $3 per night stay in many Kauai county campgrounds, though private camping grounds may be a bit more. One advantage of these camping grounds is that you will have full access to amenities, such as bathrooms, showers and picnic dining tables. Please be aware that if you decide to camp on the county camp sites, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.
Can you suggest any Kauai camping sites where we can set up the roof top tent?

Prior to our arrival in Kauai, do we have to get a Kauai camping permit?
It is a good idea to get your Kauai camping license prior to your journey. For the majority of private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you may get your licenses online and also on-the-spot in the respective office.
If you opt to stay at a county campground and use a ground tent, you can obtain permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” page.
In advance, the fees are $3 per night for nonresidents of Hawaii. Accepted payment methods with this particular application are money orders and cashier’s checks. However, you don’t necessarily have to reserve your camping permits prior to your planned arrival. You may also get them at the various permit offices in Kauai, which is usually easier.
What is the processing time for obtaining camping permits?
Whether you choose to stay at a state or private camping ground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you choose to go to a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it can take quite a while to get your permits. Permits can be bought at the permit offices on Kauai upon arrival; in-person permits are given on the spot.
