Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any age limits to rent from you?

We try to work with customers who are twenty-five years and above due to our insurance policy restrictions. But, based upon your situation, whenever possible, we always strive to be flexible.

In case you are younger than 25 years, try checking with your insurance provider to find out whether you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then call us.

Could you accommodate adults who have kids?

Yes! Please note that using our rooftop campers you’ll have to climb a small ladder. If this is a concern, we offer an extra camping tent with each package which you could set up on the ground. This may be much more comfortable for both you as well as your young children.

What is the max. capacity of your vehicles?

Our camping vehicles sleep three individuals at most, although in case there are more in your group, we do provide an extra tent, too. With this, we can easily fit about five people. All of our vehicles have 5 seatbelts.

Are you able to provide surfboards?

Yes, we provide surfboards & boogie boards as well as fins on request for a small fee. Just tell us beforehand if you want to rent one, so that we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.

Can we receive a travel guide or even a map with the nicest beaches and hiking trails to visit on Kauai?

Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best locations to visit & go camping on Kauai.

Kauai Camping Guide & Details About Camping Permits

Can I go to any beach for camping?

You can go to any beach, but you can only put up your camp in designated camping sites. This is the standard practice here on Kauai. We’ll provide you with a list of the best places to visit and also to go camping. Please remember that driving on the beaches isn’t permitted on Kauai.

Are we allowed to camp in the wild or are we just able to go to designated camping grounds? If so, how much will it cost?

No, wild camping isn’t allowed in Kauai. You should only go camping in designated locations with a valid camping permit. The fee is about $3 per night stay in most Kauai county campgrounds, though private camp sites could be a bit more. One advantage of these campgrounds is that you will have complete access to facilities, like bathrooms, showers and picnic dining tables. Please be aware that if you opt to go camping on the county campsites, you are only permitted to use the ground tent.

Where can I park and sleep with my roof top tent truck?

  • Kōkeʻe State Park (need camping permit): Kokee Rd, Hwy 550, Kekaha, HI 96752
  • Sugi Grove Campground (need camping permit): Access from MohihiCamp 10 Road, starting 100 yards past Kōkeʻe State Park headquarters along Highway 550. Latitude 22.13 N, Longitude -159.622 W.

Do we need to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?

It is definitely a better to get your Kauai camping license before your journey. For the majority of private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you can get your permits online and also on-the-spot in the respective office.

If you decide to camp at a county campground and use a ground tent, you may ask for permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.

Non-residents need to pay 3 dollars per night in advance. Payment methods accepted with this particular application are money orders and cashier’s checks. Nevertheless, it’s not necessary to book your camping licenses prior to your arrival. You can also get them at the different permit offices on the island, which is typically easier.

How much time will it take to get the camping permits?

No matter whether you choose to camp at a state or private camping ground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you decide to go to a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it can take quite some time to get your permits. You might choose to get your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the different permit offices on Kauai; in-person you will receive them right away.

TESTIMONIALS

Our Happy Clients!

Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.

Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time

Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.

We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
