Commonly Asked Questions

Is there an age requirement to rent from you?

We would rather like to work with clients who are actually 25 years and older because of our insurance coverage restrictions. But, based upon your circumstances, whenever we can, we strive to be flexible.

If you are below 25 years, consider checking in with your insurance company to find out if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then call us.

Can you accommodate adults with children?

Of course! Please keep in mind that using our rooftop campers you will need to climb a small ladder. If this is an issue, we provide an additional tent with each package which you could set up on the ground beside the camper vehicle. This could be more convenient for both you and also your kids.

How many people can your camping trucks accommodate?

We could accommodate three individuals maximum, although in case there are more in your party, we do offer an additional camping tent, too. With this, we are able to fit about five individuals. Each of our trucks has 5 seatbelts.

Can you provide surfboards?

Absolutely yes, our company offers surfboards and boogie boards and fins on request for a fee. Just inform us up-front if you would like to rent one, so we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.

Can we receive a travel guide or even a map with the best locations to visit on Kauai?

Yes, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best spots to visit & camp out on Kauai.

Kauai Camping Guide & Camping Permits FAQ

Can I go to any beach front for camping?

You can drive up to any beach, however, you should only put up your camp in designated camping grounds. Here on Kauai, this is the standard practice. We will supply you with a list of the top places to visit and also to go camping. Please be aware that driving on the beaches is not allowed on Kauai.

Is “wild camping” allowed or are we just able to visit official camping sites? If so, how much is the fee?

No, wild camping isn’t allowed on the island of Kauai. You can only go camping in specific locations with secured camping permits. The charge is about $3 per night stay in many Kauai county campgrounds, though private campsites could be a bit more. One particular advantage of these campgrounds is that you have total access to amenities, like showers, washrooms and picnic kitchen tables. Please note that if you opt to camp on the county campgrounds, you are only permitted to use the ground tent.

What camping grounds do you suggest with the rooftop tent?

  • Kōkeʻe State Park (need camping permit): Kokee Rd, Hwy 550, Kekaha, HI 96752
  • Sugi Grove Campground (need camping permit): Access from MohihiCamp 10 Road, starting 100 yards past Kōkeʻe State Park headquarters along Highway 550. Latitude 22.13 N, Longitude -159.622 W.

Before our arrival in Kauai, do we need to get a Kauai camping permit?

It’s a good idea to organize your Kauai camping permits prior to your trip. For most private campsites, which we always recommend first, you may get your licenses online and also in person in the designated office.

If you choose to camp at a county campground and use a ground tent, you can request permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.

In advance, the charges are $3 per night for non-residents of Hawaii. Payment methods accepted with this application are cashier’s checks as well as money orders. But it is not necessary to book your camping permits before your arrival. You may also obtain them at the various permit offices on the island, which is usually easier.

How much time will it take to get the camping permits?

Whether you decide to go to a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you decide to camp at a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it might take quite some time to get your permits. Permits can be obtained at the license offices on Kauai once you have arrived; in-person permits are given immediately.

TESTIMONIALS

Our Happy Clients!

Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.

Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time

Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.

We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
