Commonly Asked Questions

Is there an age requirement to rent from you?

We try to work with clients who are twenty-five years and above due to our insurance policy restrictions. Nevertheless, based upon your situation, whenever we can, we strive to be accommodating.

If you are below 25 years, consider contacting your insurance company to see if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then call us.

Can you accommodate families who have children?

Yes! Please keep in mind that using our rooftop camping vehicles you would need to climb a small ladder. If this sounds like a concern, we offer an extra tent with each package which you can easily set up on the ground. This could be more suitable for you and also your young ones.

What is the max. capacity of your vehicles?

We could accommodate three individuals at most, although in case there are more in your group, we do provide an extra camping tent, too. With this, we can easily accommodate up to 5 individuals. Each of our trucks has 5 seatbelts.

Are you able to provide surfboards?

Yes, we offer surfboards and boogie boards as well as fins on request for a small fee. Simply tell us in advance if you would like to rent one, so we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.

Can we get a guide book or a map with the best hiking trails & beaches to explore on Kauai?

Yes, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best spots to see and camp out on Kauai.

Kauai Camping Guide & Camping Permits FAQ

Can I go to any beach for camping?

You may drive up to any beach, but you should only set up your camp in official camping sites. Here on Kauai, this is the usual practice. We’ll supply you with a list of the ideal locations to check out and also to go camping. Please remember that driving a vehicle on the beaches is not allowed on Kauai.

Are we allowed to camp in the wild or are we just able to visit official camping sites? If so, how much does it cost?

No, wild camping isn’t allowed on the island of Kauai. You should only go camping in specific locations with secured camping permits. The charge is around $3 per night in the majority of Kauai county campgrounds, but private camp sites may be a little more. The good thing about these camping grounds is that you will have complete access to facilities, like bathrooms, showers and picnic dining tables. Please remember that if you opt to go camping on the county camp sites, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.

What campgrounds do you suggest with the rooftop camping tent?

  • Kōkeʻe State Park (need camping permit): Kokee Rd, Hwy 550, Kekaha, HI 96752
  • Sugi Grove Campground (need camping permit): Access from MohihiCamp 10 Road, starting 100 yards past Kōkeʻe State Park headquarters along Highway 550. Latitude 22.13 N, Longitude -159.622 W.
  • YMCA of Kaua’i (camping without a permit but reservation is required): 4477 Nuhou St, Lihue, HI 96766
  • Kumu Camp: Anahola Beach Retreat (camping without a permit but reservation is required): 4275 Poha Rd, Anahola, HI 96703

  • Camp Slogget operated by YWCA Kaua’i in beautiful Koke’e State Park (camping without a permit but reservation is required): get directions from their website https://ywcakauai.org/camp-sloggett
  • Camp Hale Koa – private campground in Koke’e State Park (camping without a permit but reservation is required): this is for larger groups only, for more info, please visit their web page http://camphalekoa.com

Do we need to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?

It is definitely a better to obtain your Kauai camping license prior to your arrival. For the majority of private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you can secure your licenses on the internet and also in person in the designated office.

If you choose to camp at a county campground and set up a ground tent, you may obtain permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” page.

Non-residents have to pay three dollars per night up-front. Accepted payment methods with this particular application are money orders and cashier’s checks. But it isn’t necessary to reserve your camping licenses prior to your planned arrival. You may also obtain them at the designated permit offices in Kauai, which is usually easier.

How long will it take to get the camping permits?

If you choose to camp at a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you decide to camp at a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it can take quite some time to receive your permits. You might obtain your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the designated permit offices on the island; in-person you will get them on the spot.

TESTIMONIALS

Our Happy Clients!

Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.

Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time

Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.

We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
