Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any age limits to rent from you?

We prefer to work with clients who are twenty-five years and above because of our insurance coverage restrictions. But, based on your situation, whenever we can, we always try to be accommodating.

In case you are below 25 years, try checking in with your insurance company to find out if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then contact us.

Are you able to accommodate adults who have kids?

Of course! Please keep in mind that using our rooftop campers you will need to climb up a small ladder. If this is an issue, we also offer an additional tent with each package which you may set up on the ground next to the camper vehicle. This may be much more comfortable for you and also your young ones.

How many people can your camping trucks fit?

We can accommodate 3 individuals maximum, although in case there are more in your party, we do have an extra tent, as well. With this, we are able to fit as much as 5 individuals. All of our vehicles have 5 seatbelts.

Do you provide surfboards?

Yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards & boogie boards and fins on request for a small fee. Simply let us know up-front if you want to rent one, so that we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.

Do we receive a travel guide or perhaps a map with the nicest places to check out on Kauai?

Yes, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best spots to check out and camp out on Kauai.

Kauai Camping Guide & Information Regarding Camping Permits

Can I go to any beach for camping?

You may go to any beach, however, you can only set up your camp in designated camping sites. Here on Kauai, this is the standard procedure. We’ll give you a list of the top locations to visit and to go camping. Please note that driving on the beaches isn’t allowed on Kauai.

Is “wild camping” permitted or can we just go to official camping sites? If so, how much will it cost?

No, wild camping is not allowed on the island of Kauai. You may only camp in specified areas with secured camping permits. The fee is approximately $3 per night in many Kauai county campgrounds, though private campgrounds could be a little more. One particular advantage of these campgrounds is that you have complete access to amenities, such as restrooms, showers & picnic tables. Please be aware that if you opt to go camping on the county campgrounds, you are only permitted to use the ground tent.

What campsites do you recommend with the rooftop tent?

  • Kōkeʻe State Park (need camping permit): Kokee Rd, Hwy 550, Kekaha, HI 96752
  • Sugi Grove Campground (need camping permit): Access from MohihiCamp 10 Road, starting 100 yards past Kōkeʻe State Park headquarters along Highway 550. Latitude 22.13 N, Longitude -159.622 W.
  • YMCA of Kaua’i (camping without a permit but reservation is required): 4477 Nuhou St, Lihue, HI 96766

Before our arrival in Kauai, do we have to get a Kauai camping permit?

It is definitely a good idea to organize your Kauai camping license prior to your trip. For the majority of private campsites, which we always recommend first, you can get your licenses on the internet and also on-the-spot in the designated office.

If you decide to stay at a county campsite and use a ground tent, you may ask for permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.

Non-residents must pay 3 dollars per night up-front. Accepted payment methods with this application are money orders & cashier’s checks. Nevertheless, you don’t necessarily have to reserve your camping permits prior to your planned arrival. You could also obtain them at the different permit offices in Kauai, which is usually easier.

What is the processing time for obtaining camping permits?

Whether you decide to camp at a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you decide to camp at a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it might take quite a while to get your permits. You might choose to obtain your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the designated permit offices on Kauai; in-person you will receive them right away.

TESTIMONIALS

Our Happy Clients!

Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.

Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time

Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.

We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
