Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a minimum age to rent from you?
We would rather like to work with customers who are actually twenty-five years and above because of our insurance policy restrictions. However, based upon your circumstances, whenever possible, we try to be flexible.
If you are below twenty-five, consider checking with your insurance provider to find out if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then call us.
Are your roof top tent campers family friendly?
Certainly! Please keep in mind that with our rooftop campers you would need to climb a small ladder. If this is an issue, we offer an extra camping tent with each package which you can put up on the ground. This may be much more comfortable for both you and your little ones.
What is the maximum capacity of your camper trucks?
We could fit 3 people at most, though if there are more within your group, we do provide an additional camping tent, as well. With this, we can easily accommodate about 5 people. Each of our trucks has 5 seatbelts.
Can you provide surfboards?
Certainly, we provide both surfboards and boogie boards as well as fins upon request for a fee. Just let us know up-front if you would like to rent one, so that we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.
Can we receive a guidebook or even a map with the best places to check out on Kauai?
Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best locations to check out & go camping on Kauai.
Kauai Camping Guide & Details About Camping Permits
Can I head to any beach front for camping?
You may drive up to any beach, but you should only set up your camp in official camping grounds. This is the usual practice here on Kauai. We’ll give you a list of the greatest places to explore and to camp in. Please note that driving on the beaches isn’t permitted on Kauai.
Are we permitted to camp in the wild or can we just go to designated camping grounds? If so, how much does it cost?
No, wild camping isn’t allowed in Kauai. You can only go camping in official areas with secured camping permits. The fee is roughly $3 per night stay in the majority of Kauai county campgrounds, though private camping grounds could be a little more. One advantage of these campgrounds is that you have complete access to amenities, such as showers, restrooms & picnic dining tables. Please be aware that if you opt to go camping on the county campgrounds, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.
What camping grounds do you recommend with the rooftop tent?
- Kōkeʻe State Park (need camping permit): Kokee Rd, Hwy 550, Kekaha, HI 96752
- Sugi Grove Campground (need camping permit): Access from MohihiCamp 10 Road, starting 100 yards past Kōkeʻe State Park headquarters along Highway 550. Latitude 22.13 N, Longitude -159.622 W.
- YMCA of Kaua’i (camping without a permit but reservation is required): 4477 Nuhou St, Lihue, HI 96766
- Kumu Camp: Anahola Beach Retreat (camping without a permit but reservation is required): 4275 Poha Rd, Anahola, HI 96703
- Camp Nau’e YMCA (camping without a permit but reservation is required): 7420 Kuhio Hwy, Hanalei, Kauai, HI 96714
- Camp Slogget operated by YWCA Kaua’i in beautiful Koke’e State Park (camping without a permit but reservation is required): get directions from their website https://ywcakauai.org/camp-sloggett
- Camp Hale Koa – private campground in Koke’e State Park (camping without a permit but reservation is required): this is for larger groups only, for more info, please visit their web page http://camphalekoa.com
Before our arrival in Kauai, do we have to get a Kauai camping permit?
It is a better to get your Kauai camping permits before your arrival. For most private campsites, which we always recommend first, you may secure your licenses online and also on-the-spot in the designated office.
If you opt to camp at a county campground and use a ground tent, you may ask for permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” web page.
Up-front, the fees are $3 per night for nonresidents of Hawaii. Payment methods accepted with this particular application are bank checks and also money orders. But it isn’t necessary to reserve your camping permits before your planned arrival. You could also get them at the various permit offices in Kauai, which is typically easier.
What is the processing time for getting camping permits?
Whether you choose to go to a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you choose to stay at a county campsite, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it might take quite a while to receive your permits. You might receive your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the various permit offices on the island; in-person you will receive them right away.
