Here are Some Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an age requirement to rent from you?
We prefer to do business with clients who are actually twenty-five years and older due to our insurance policy restrictions. However, based upon your needs, whenever possible, we always try to be flexible.
If you are younger than twenty-five, consider checking in with your insurance company to find out whether you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then call us.
Are you able to accommodate adults with kids?
Certainly! Please keep in mind that using our rooftop camping vehicles you would need to climb a little ladder. If this is an issue, we also offer an extra tent with every package which you may put up on the ground beside the camper vehicle. This could be much more comfortable for you and your young children.
What is the maximum capacity of your camper vehicles?
We could accommodate 3 individuals at most, though in case there are more within your group, we do have an extra camping tent, too. With this, we can easily allow for up to 5 people. Each of our vehicles has 5 seatbelts.
Are you able to provide surfboards?
Absolutely yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards & boogie boards and fins on request for a small fee. Just let us know beforehand if you would like to rent one, so we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.
Can we get a guidebook or even a map with the greatest areas to visit on Kauai?
Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best spots to visit & go camping on Kauai.
Finest Places For Camping On Kauai & Camping Permits FAQ
Can I head to any beach for camping?
You could drive up to any beach, however, you should only put up your camp in official camping sites. Here on Kauai, this is the standard practice. We will supply you with a list of the best locations to visit and to camp in. Please be aware that driving a vehicle on the beaches isn’t allowed on Kauai.
Are we permitted to camp in the wild or are we only able to go to designated camping grounds? If so, how much does it cost?
No, wild camping isn’t allowed in Kauai. You may only camp in designated areas with secured camping permits. The charge is roughly $3 per night stay in most Kauai county parks, but private campgrounds may be a bit more. The good thing about these camping grounds is that you will have full access to facilities, such as bathrooms, showers and picnic kitchen tables. Please keep in mind that if you choose to go camping on the county campsites, you are only permitted to use the ground tent.

Do we have to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?
It is a better to get your Kauai camping permits before your journey. For most private campgrounds, which we always recommend first, you may get your licenses on the internet and also on-the-spot in the respective office.
If you opt to camp at a county campsite and use a ground tent, you may obtain permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” page.
In advance, the costs are $3 per night for nonresidents of Hawaii. Accepted payment methods with this particular application are cashier’s checks and money orders. Nevertheless, you don’t necessarily have to book your camping permits before your planned arrival. You may also obtain them at the various permit offices in Kauai, which is usually easier.
How much time will it take to get the camping permits?
If you choose to stay at a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you choose to stay at a county campsite, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it might take quite some time to obtain your permits. Permits can be bought at the permit offices on Kauai upon arrival; in-person permits are given immediately.
