FAQs
Is there an age requirement to rent from you?
We prefer to do business with customers who are actually 25 years and older due to our insurance policy restrictions. Having said that, based on your needs, whenever possible, we always try to be accommodating.
If you are below twenty-five, consider contacting your insurance company to see if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can contact us.
Can you accommodate families who have children?
Certainly! Please keep in mind that using our rooftop camping vehicles you’ll have to climb a little ladder. If this is a problem, we also provide an extra camping tent with every package which you may put up on the ground. This can be more convenient for both you and also your young children.
How many individuals can your camping trucks fit?
The camper trucks fit three individuals at most, although if there are more in your party, we do offer an additional camping tent, as well. With this, we can easily allow for about five individuals. Each of our vehicles has 5 seatbelts.
Are you offering surfboards?
Certainly, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards and boogie boards and fins on request for a fee. Simply tell us up-front if you would like to rent one, so we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.
Do we get a guide or perhaps a map with the best hiking trails & beaches to check out on Kauai?
Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best places to see & go camping on Kauai.
Kauai Camping Guide & Details About Camping Permits
Am I able to head to any beach front to camp?
You could drive up to any beach, however, you should only set up your camp in official camping grounds. This is the standard practice here on Kauai. We will supply you with a list of the greatest locations to visit and to camp in. Please remember that driving on the beaches is not allowed on Kauai.
Are we allowed to camp in the wild or can we just visit official camping sites? If so, what is the fee?
No, wild camping isn’t permitted in Kauai. You should only go camping in specific areas with a valid camping permit. The associated fee is about $3 per night in most Kauai county campgrounds, but private campsites may be a bit more. One particular advantage of these campgrounds is that you will have complete access to facilities, such as restrooms, showers and picnic kitchen tables. Please be aware that if you decide to camp on the county campsites, you are only permitted to use the ground tent.

Prior to our arrival in Kauai, do we have to get a Kauai camping permit?
It is a better to organize your Kauai camping permits before your journey. For the majority of private campgrounds, which we always recommend first, you may get your licenses online and also on-the-spot in the respective office.
If you opt to stay at a county campsite and set up a ground tent, you may ask for permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” web page.
Non-residents have to pay three dollars per night in advance. Accepted payment methods with this application are money orders & cashier’s checks. But it is not absolutely necessary to reserve your camping licenses before your arrival. You may also get them at the various permit offices on the island, which is typically easier.
How much time does it take to obtain the camping permits?
No matter if you choose to stay at a state or private camping ground, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you decide to go to a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it can take quite some time to obtain your permits. Permits can be obtained at the permit offices on Kauai once you have arrived; in-person permits are given on the spot.
