Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an age requirement to rent from you?

We would rather like to do business with clients who are twenty-five years and older due to our insurance coverage restrictions. On the other hand, depending on your circumstances, whenever we can, we strive to be accommodating.

If you are younger than twenty-five, try contacting your insurance company to determine if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then call us.

Are your roof top tent campers kids friendly?

Absolutely! Please note that using our rooftop camping vehicles you’ll have to climb up a little ladder. If this is an issue, we also offer an extra camping tent with each package which you can easily put up on the ground beside your camper vehicle. This could be more convenient for you as well as your young ones.

What is the maximum capacity of your vehicles?

We could fit three people maximum, though in case there are more within your party, we do have an additional tent, too. With this, we can easily allow for up to 5 individuals. Each of our vehicles has 5 seatbelts.

What about surfboards?

Absolutely yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards & boogie boards as well as fins upon request for a small fee. Just inform us in advance if you would like to rent one, so we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.

Can we get a travel guide or a map with the nicest areas to explore on Kauai?

Yes, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best locations to see and camp out on Kauai.

Kauai Camping Guide & Information Regarding Camping Permits

Am I able to head to any beach to camp?

You may go to any beach, but you can only set up your camp in designated camping sites. Here on Kauai, this is the usual practice. We will give you a list of the ideal locations to check out and to camp in. Please remember that driving on the beaches isn’t permitted on Kauai.

Is “wild camping” allowed or are we only able to visit designated camping grounds? If so, how much does it cost?

No, wild camping is not allowed in Kauai. You can only go camping in specified locations with a valid camping permit. The associated fee is about $3 per night in many Kauai county campgrounds, but private campgrounds may be a little more. The good thing about these campgrounds is that you will have full access to facilities, like bathrooms, showers and picnic kitchen tables. Please be aware that if you opt to camp on the county campgrounds, you are only permitted to set up the ground tent.

Where can I park and sleep with a roof top tent camper?

  • Kōkeʻe State Park (need camping permit): Kokee Rd, Hwy 550, Kekaha, HI 96752
  • Sugi Grove Campground (need camping permit): Access from MohihiCamp 10 Road, starting 100 yards past Kōkeʻe State Park headquarters along Highway 550. Latitude 22.13 N, Longitude -159.622 W.
  • YMCA of Kaua’i (camping without a permit but reservation is required): 4477 Nuhou St, Lihue, HI 96766
  • Kumu Camp: Anahola Beach Retreat (camping without a permit but reservation is required): 4275 Poha Rd, Anahola, HI 96703

  • Camp Slogget operated by YWCA Kaua’i in beautiful Koke’e State Park (camping without a permit but reservation is required): get directions from their web page https://ywcakauai.org/camp-sloggett
  • Camp Hale Koa – private campground in Koke’e State Park (camping without a permit but reservation is required): this is for larger groups only, for more info, please go to their website http://camphalekoa.com

Before our arrival in Kauai, do we have to get a Kauai camping permit?

It is definitely a good idea to organize your Kauai camping license prior to your arrival. For most private campgrounds, which we always recommend first, you can get your licenses online and also on-the-spot in the respective office.

If you opt to camp at a county campground and set up a ground tent, you may ask for permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” web page.

In advance, the fees are $3 per night for nonresidents of Hawaii. Payment methods accepted with this application are cashier’s checks and money orders. However, it’s not absolutely necessary to book your camping licenses prior to your arrival. You may also obtain them at the designated permit offices on the island, which is usually easier.

How long does it take to get the camping permits?

If you choose to stay at a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you decide to stay at a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it can take quite some time to receive your permits. Permits can be bought at the permit offices on Kauai upon arrival; in-person permits are given right away.

We at Kauai Rooftop Campers are happy to serve the entire Garden Island Kauai – always with Aloha!

TESTIMONIALS

Our Happy Clients!

Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.

Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time

Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.

We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
