Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an age requirement to rent from you?
We try to work with customers who are actually twenty-five years and above due to our insurance policy restrictions. However, based upon your situation, whenever possible, we always strive to be accommodating.
If you are below 25 years, consider checking with your insurer to find out whether you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can call us.
Can you accommodate families who have kids?
Certainly! Please note that with our rooftop camping vehicles you will need to climb up a small ladder. If this is a problem, we also provide an additional tent with each of our packages which you may set up on the ground. This could be much more comfortable for both you and also your little ones.
How many people can your camping vehicles fit?
Our camper vehicles sleep 3 individuals at most, although if there are more within your group, we do have an extra camping tent, too. With this, we can easily allow for up to five individuals. Each of our trucks has 5 seatbelts.
Can you provide surfboards?
Certainly, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards & boogie boards and also fins upon request for a small fee. Just inform us in advance if you want to rent one, so we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.
Do we receive a guide or even a map with the nicest hiking trails & beaches to explore on Kauai?
Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best spots to visit & camp out on Kauai.
Kauai Camping Guide & Specifics About Camping Permits
Am I able to head to any beach front for camping?
You can go to any beach, nevertheless, you can only put up your camp in designated camping grounds. Here on Kauai, this is the standard practice. We will give you a list of the best locations to check out and also to camp in. Please be aware that driving on the beaches isn’t allowed on Kauai.
Are we permitted to camp in the wild or can we only visit designated camping grounds? If so, what is the cost?
No, wild camping is not permitted on the island of Kauai. You may only go camping in specified locations with secured camping permits. The fee is roughly $3 per night in many Kauai county campgrounds, but private campsites could be a little more. One advantage of these campgrounds is that you have full access to facilities, like showers, washrooms & picnic dining tables. Please be aware that if you choose to go camping on the county camp sites, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.
Can you recommend any Kauai camping sites where I can set up the roof top tent?

Prior to our arrival in Kauai, do we have to get a Kauai camping permit?
It’s a better to get your Kauai camping permits before your arrival. For most private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you may secure your licenses online and also in person in the respective office.
If you decide to stay at a county campground and use a ground tent, you can request permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.
Up-front, the fees are $3 per night for non-residents of Hawaii. Accepted payment methods with this application are money orders & cashier’s checks. But it is not absolutely necessary to book your camping permits prior to your planned arrival. You could also get them at the different permit offices on the island, which is usually easier.
How long will it take to obtain the camping permits?
If you choose to go to a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you choose to camp at a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it might take quite some time to obtain your permits. You might get your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the designated permit offices on the island; in-person you will receive them immediately.
