FAQs
Is there an age requirement to rent from you?
We try to do business with customers who are actually twenty-five years and above because of our insurance coverage restrictions. But, depending on your needs, whenever we can, we try to be accommodating.
If you are younger than 25 years, consider contacting your insurer to see if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can contact us.
Are your roof top tent campers family friendly?
Certainly! Please keep in mind that using our rooftop camping vehicles you will need to climb up one small ladder. If this sounds like a problem, we provide an additional camping tent with every package which you can set up on the ground. This can be more comfortable for both you and also your little ones.
What is the max. capacity of your camper vehicles?
Our camper trucks fit three people maximum, though in case there are more within your party, we do provide an extra camping tent, as well. With this, we can easily allow for as much as 5 people. Each of our vehicles has 5 seatbelts.
Do you offer surfboards?
Absolutely yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards & boogie boards and fins on request for a fee. Just inform us up-front if you want to rent one, so we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.
Do we receive a guidebook or even a map with the best areas to check out on Kauai?
Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best spots to see & go camping on Kauai.
Kauai Camping Guide & Camping Permits FAQ
Am I able to visit any beach to camp?
You can drive up to any beach, nevertheless, you should only set up your camp in official camping sites. This is the usual practice here on Kauai. We will give you a list of the top locations to visit and to camp in. Please remember that driving on the beaches is not permitted on Kauai.
Are we permitted to camp in the wild or can we only go to official camping sites? If so, what is the charge?
No, wild camping is not allowed on the island of Kauai. You can only camp in specific areas with secured camping permits. The associated fee is about $3 per night in most Kauai county parks, but private camping grounds could be a bit more. The good thing about these campsites is that you have full access to facilities, such as showers, washrooms & picnic dining tables. Please be aware that if you choose to go camping on the county campsites, you are only permitted to use the ground tent.
What camping grounds do you suggest with the rooftop tent?
- Kōkeʻe State Park (need camping permit): Kokee Rd, Hwy 550, Kekaha, HI 96752
- Sugi Grove Campground (need camping permit): Access from MohihiCamp 10 Road, starting 100 yards past Kōkeʻe State Park headquarters along Highway 550. Latitude 22.13 N, Longitude -159.622 W.

Do we need to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?
It is a better to organize your Kauai camping permits prior to your journey. For the majority of private campsites, which we always recommend first, you can secure your permits online and also on-the-spot in the respective office.
If you decide to stay at a county campground and set up a ground tent, you can request permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” web page.
Up-front, the fees are $3 per night for nonresidents of Hawaii. Accepted payment methods with this particular application are money orders & cashier’s checks. However, you don’t necessarily have to book your camping permits before your planned arrival. You could also obtain them at the various permit offices on the island, which is typically easier.
What is the processing time for getting camping permits?
No matter whether you choose to camp at a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you decide to camp at a county campsite, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it can take quite some time to get your permits. Permits can be bought at the permit offices on Kauai once you have arrived; in-person permits are given on-the-spot.
