Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum age to rent from you?

We would rather like to work with customers who are twenty-five years and older due to our insurance policy restrictions. However, depending on your circumstances, whenever we can, we always strive to be flexible.

If you are younger than 25 years, try checking with your insurance company to find out if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then contact us.

Are your roof top tent camping vehicles family friendly?

Of course! Please note that with our rooftop campers you will need to climb up a little ladder. If this sounds like a concern, we offer an additional camping tent with each package which you can put up on the ground next to the camper truck. This can be more comfortable for both you as well as your young ones.

How many individuals can your camping vehicles accommodate?

We could accommodate three people maximum, though in case there are more within your group, we do offer an extra tent, too. With this, we are able to fit about 5 individuals. All of our trucks have 5 seatbelts.

What about surfboards?

Certainly, we offer surfboards & boogie boards and fins on request for a fee. Just inform us up-front if you want to rent one, so we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.

Do we get a guide or a map with the nicest hiking trails and beaches to explore on Kauai?

Certainly, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best places to visit and camp out on Kauai.

Kauai Camping Guide & Camping Permits FAQ

Can I head to any beach to camp?

You can drive up to any beach, nevertheless, you can only put up your camp in designated camping grounds. This is the standard practice here on Kauai. We will provide you with a list of the top locations to check out and also to go camping. Please be aware that driving on the beaches isn’t allowed on Kauai.

Are we allowed to camp in the wild or are we only able to go to official camping sites? If so, how much does it cost?

No, wild camping isn’t permitted on the island of Kauai. You should only go camping in specified areas with a current camping permit. The fee is about $3 per night in the majority of Kauai county parks, though private camp sites may be a little more. One advantage of these campgrounds is that you have full access to amenities, including showers, bathrooms and picnic tables. Please keep in mind that if you decide to camp on the county camp sites, you are only permitted to set up the ground tent.

Where can I park and sleep with a roof top tent truck?

  • Kōkeʻe State Park (need camping permit): Kokee Rd, Hwy 550, Kekaha, HI 96752
  • Sugi Grove Campground (need camping permit): Access from MohihiCamp 10 Road, starting 100 yards past Kōkeʻe State Park headquarters along Highway 550. Latitude 22.13 N, Longitude -159.622 W.

Do we have to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?

It is a better to get your Kauai camping license before your trip. For the majority of private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you can get your permits online and also in person in the designated office.

If you choose to camp at a county campground and use a ground tent, you may ask for permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” web page.

In advance, the charges are $3 per night for nonresidents of Hawaii. Accepted payment methods with this application are cashier’s checks as well as money orders. Nevertheless, you don’t necessarily have to book your camping licenses before your arrival. You could also obtain them at the designated permit offices in Kauai, which is typically easier.

How long does it take to obtain the camping permits?

No matter whether you choose to go to a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you choose to stay at a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it can take quite a while to receive your permits. You may choose to obtain your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the different permit offices on the island; in-person you will get them right away.

TESTIMONIALS

Our Happy Clients!

Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.

Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time

Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.

We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
