Frequently Asked Questions
Are there any age restrictions to rent from you?
We prefer to work with customers who are twenty-five years and older because of our insurance policy restrictions. Having said that, depending on your circumstances, whenever we can, we always try to be accommodating.
If you are below twenty-five, try checking with your insurance provider to see if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then contact us.
Are your rooftop tents kids friendly?
Certainly! Please note that with our rooftop camping vehicles you will need to climb up a little ladder. If this sounds like an issue, we also offer an extra tent with every package which you can easily set up on the ground. This can be more convenient for you as well as your kids.
How many people can your camper vehicles fit?
The camping trucks fit three people maximum, though in case there are more in your group, we do provide an extra tent, as well. With this, we are able to allow for about 5 people. Each of our vehicles has 5 seatbelts.
Do you have surfboards?
Certainly, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards & boogie boards and fins on request for a fee. Simply tell us in advance if you want to rent one, so that we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.
Do we get a travel guide or perhaps a map with the greatest hiking trails and beaches to check out on Kauai?
Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best places to check out & camp out on Kauai.
Kauai Camping Guide & Camping Permits FAQ
Am I able to go to any beach front to camp?
You can go to any beach, but you should only set up your camp in designated camping sites. This is the typical practice here on Kauai. We will provide you with a list of the best places to check out and to go camping. Please remember that driving on the beaches isn’t permitted on Kauai.
Are we allowed to camp in the wild or are we just able to go to designated camping sites? If so, how much does it cost?
No, wild camping is not permitted in Kauai. You may only go camping in official locations with a valid camping permit. The associated fee is around $3 per night in the majority of Kauai county campgrounds, but private camp sites could be a bit more. One advantage of these camping grounds is that you have full access to facilities, such as showers, bathrooms and picnic dining tables. Please be aware that if you choose to go camping on the county campgrounds, you are only allowed to set up the ground tent.

Do we need to get Kauai camping permits before we arrive in Kauai?
It is a good idea to organize your Kauai camping permits before your journey. For the majority of private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you may get your licenses on the internet and also on-the-spot in the respective office.
If you decide to camp at a county campground and use a ground tent, you may request permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.
In advance, the charges are $3 per night for non-residents of Hawaii. Accepted payment methods with this application are money orders and cashier’s checks. However, it is not necessary to book your camping permits prior to your arrival. You may also obtain them at the different permit offices in Kauai, which is usually easier.
What is the processing time for obtaining camping permits?
If you decide to camp at a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you decide to camp at a county campsite, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it might take quite a while to receive your permits. You might get your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the designated permit offices on the island; in-person you will get them on the spot.
