Commonly Asked Questions

What’s the minimum age for renting from you?

We try to work with clients who are 25 years and older because of our insurance coverage restrictions. On the other hand, based upon your needs, whenever we can, we try to be accommodating.

If you are younger than twenty-five, consider checking in with your insurer to find out if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then call us.

Are your rooftop tents family friendly?

Absolutely! Please keep in mind that using our rooftop campers you would need to climb one small ladder. If this is an issue, we also provide an extra camping tent with each package which you may set up on the ground. This could be more convenient for you and your young ones.

What is the maximum capacity of your camper vehicles?

We could accommodate three individuals maximum, though if there are more within your group, we do have an extra tent, as well. With this, we can easily fit up to five people. All of our trucks have 5 seatbelts.

Do you offer surfboards?

Certainly, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards and boogie boards and also fins upon request for a small fee. Just inform us in advance if you want to rent one, so we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.

Do we get a guide or a map with the greatest beaches and hiking trails to explore on Kauai?

Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best spots to check out & camp out on Kauai.

Kauai Camping Guide & Details About Camping Permits

Can I go to any beach front to camp?

You may drive up to any beach, but you can only set up your camp in official camping sites. Here on Kauai, this is the standard practice. We’ll supply you with a list of the greatest locations to explore and also to camp in. Please be aware that driving a vehicle on the beaches is not permitted on Kauai.

Are we permitted to camp in the wild or are we only able to visit official camping grounds? If so, what is the fee?

No, wild camping is not allowed on the island of Kauai. You may only go camping in specified locations with a valid camping permit. The fee is around $3 per night stay in most Kauai county parks, though private campsites could be a bit more. One particular advantage of these campgrounds is that you will have complete access to facilities, including showers, washrooms & picnic tables. Please be aware that if you decide to go camping on the county campsites, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.

Do we have to get Kauai camping permits before we arrive in Kauai?

It is a good idea to organize your Kauai camping permits before your arrival. For the majority of private campgrounds, which we always recommend first, you may secure your permits online and also on-the-spot in the respective office.

If you opt to stay at a county campsite and set up a ground tent, you may obtain permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.

Non-residents have to pay 3 dollars per night in advance. Payment methods accepted with this application are bank checks and also money orders. Nevertheless, it’s not necessary to reserve your camping licenses before your planned arrival. You may also obtain them at the various permit offices in Kauai, which is typically easier.

How long does it take to obtain the camping permits?

Whether you decide to camp at a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you decide to camp at a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it might take quite some time to obtain your permits. You might choose to get your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the different permit offices on Kauai; in-person you will receive them immediately.

TESTIMONIALS

Our Happy Clients!

Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.

Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time

Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.

We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
