Frequently Asked Questions
Are there any age limits to rent from you?
We would rather like to do business with clients who are twenty-five years and above due to our insurance coverage restrictions. However, depending on your needs, whenever we can, we strive to be flexible.
If you are below 25 years, try contacting your insurer to see if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then contact us.
Are your roof top tents kids friendly?
Yes! Please keep in mind that using our rooftop camping vehicles you would need to climb up a small ladder. If this sounds like a concern, we also provide an additional tent with all of our packages which you can put up on the ground next to your camper vehicle. This may be much more comfortable for both you and your young children.
How many individuals can your camper vehicles fit?
The roof top tent camper vehicles fit 3 people maximum, although if there are more within your group, we do have an extra tent, as well. With this, we are able to allow for as much as five individuals. All of our trucks have 5 seatbelts.
Are you offering surfboards?
Certainly, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards & boogie boards as well as fins on request for a small fee. Simply inform us up-front if you want to rent one, so we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.
Can we receive a guide or even a map with the best hiking trails and beaches to visit on Kauai?
Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best places to see & go camping on Kauai.
Ideal Locations For Camping Out On Kauai & Camping Permits FAQ
Am I able to go to any beach front for camping?
You can go to any beach, but you can only set up your camp in designated camping sites. Here on Kauai, this is the usual procedure. We will give you a list of the greatest locations to check out and to camp in. Please remember that driving on the beaches isn’t permitted on Kauai.
Is “wild camping” allowed or can we only go to official camping grounds? If so, how much does it cost?
No, wild camping isn’t allowed on the island of Kauai. You can only go camping in designated areas with secured camping permits. The fee is about $3 per night stay in many Kauai county campgrounds, but private camping grounds may be a little more. One particular advantage of these campsites is that you will have complete access to facilities, like bathrooms, showers & picnic dining tables. Please be aware that if you decide to camp on the county camp sites, you are only allowed to set up the ground tent.

Before our arrival in Kauai, do we need to get a Kauai camping permit?
It is definitely a good idea to organize your Kauai camping license prior to your arrival. For the majority of private campsites, which we always recommend first, you may get your permits on the internet and also on-the-spot in the respective office.
If you opt to camp at a county campground and set up a ground tent, you can obtain permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.
In advance, the fees are $3 per night for non-residents of Hawaii. Payment methods accepted with this application are cashier’s checks as well as money orders. However, it isn’t necessary to book your camping permits before your arrival. You could also get them at the different permit offices in Kauai, which is usually easier.
How much time will it take to obtain the camping permits?
If you choose to go to a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you choose to stay at a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it might take quite a while to obtain your permits. You might choose to receive your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the designated permit offices on Kauai; in-person you will receive them immediately.
