Certainly, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best places to see & go camping on Kauai.

Kauai Camping Guide & Information Regarding Camping Permits

Am I able to visit any beach to camp?

You may drive up to any beach, nevertheless, you can only put up your camp in official camping grounds. This is the usual practice here on Kauai. We will give you a list of the top places to check out and to camp in. Please note that driving a vehicle on the beaches isn’t allowed on Kauai.

Are we allowed to camp in the wild or can we only go to official camping grounds? If so, what is the cost?

No, wild camping isn’t permitted in Kauai. You may only go camping in specified areas with secured camping permits. The charge is approximately $3 per night in most Kauai county campgrounds, but private campgrounds could be a little more. The good thing about these campsites is that you have full access to facilities, like bathrooms, showers and picnic kitchen tables. Please remember that if you choose to camp on the county campgrounds, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.

What campgrounds do you suggest with the rooftop tent?

  • Kōkeʻe State Park (need camping permit): Kokee Rd, Hwy 550, Kekaha, HI 96752

Do we need to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?

It is definitely a good idea to organize your Kauai camping license prior to your arrival. For most private campgrounds, which we always recommend first, you can get your permits on the internet and also on-the-spot in the designated office.

If you opt to stay at a county campground and set up a ground tent, you may request permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” web page.

Non-residents have to pay three dollars per night beforehand. Accepted payment methods with this application are money orders & cashier’s checks. But it isn’t absolutely necessary to book your camping licenses before your arrival. You can also obtain them at the various permit offices in Kauai, which is usually easier.

What is the processing time for getting camping permits?

Whether you decide to go to a state or private camping ground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you choose to stay at a county campsite, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it might take quite a while to obtain your permits. You might choose to receive your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the designated permit offices on Kauai; in-person you will receive them immediately.

TESTIMONIALS

Our Happy Clients!

Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.

Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time

Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.

We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
