Commonly Asked Questions

Is there an age requirement to rent from you?

We try to work with customers who are actually 25 years and older because of our insurance policy restrictions. On the other hand, based on your circumstances, whenever we can, we strive to be flexible.

If you are below 25 years, consider contacting your insurance company to determine if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can contact us.

Are your rooftop tents family friendly?

Of course! Please note that with our rooftop camping vehicles you would need to climb a small ladder. If this sounds like an issue, we offer an extra tent with all of our packages which you can set up on the ground beside your camper truck. This could be much more comfortable for you and also your children.

How many people can your camping vehicles fit?

The camping vehicles fit 3 individuals at most, though in case there are more in your party, we do offer an extra tent, too. With this, we are able to fit about five people. All of our vehicles have 5 seatbelts.

Are you offering surfboards?

Yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards & boogie boards and fins upon request for a fee. Just tell us beforehand if you would like to rent one, so we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.

Do we get a guidebook or a map with the greatest beaches & hiking trails to explore on Kauai?

Sure, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best spots to check out and camp out on Kauai.

Best Places For Camping Outdoors On Kauai & Camping Permits FAQ

Can I visit any beach front for camping?

You may go to any beach, nevertheless, you can only set up your camp in designated camping sites. This is the standard practice here on Kauai. We will supply you with a list of the greatest places to visit and to camp in. Please be aware that driving a vehicle on the beaches isn’t allowed on Kauai.

Is “wild camping” allowed or are we just able to visit designated camping sites? If so, how much does it cost?

No, wild camping isn’t allowed on the island of Kauai. You should only go camping in specified areas with secured camping permits. The associated fee is approximately $3 per night in many Kauai county campgrounds, but private campgrounds could be a bit more. One particular advantage of these camping grounds is that you have total access to amenities, including showers, restrooms & picnic dining tables. Please keep in mind that if you choose to camp on the county campgrounds, you are only allowed to set up the ground tent.

Do we need to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?

It is a better to organize your Kauai camping permits prior to your trip. For most private campsites, which we always recommend first, you may get your licenses on the internet and also in person in the respective office.

If you opt to stay at a county campground and use a ground tent, you may request permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” web page.

Non-residents need to pay three dollars per night beforehand. Payment methods accepted with this application are cashier’s checks as well as money orders. But it is not necessary to book your camping licenses before your arrival. You could also get them at the various permit offices on the island, which is usually easier.

What is the processing time for getting camping permits?

Whether you decide to stay at a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you choose to go to a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it can take quite a while to get your permits. Permits can be bought at the license offices on Kauai upon arrival; in-person permits are given on-the-spot.

TESTIMONIALS

Our Happy Clients!

Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.

Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time

Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.

We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
