Is there an age requirement to rent from you?

We would rather like to work with clients who are 25 years and above because of our insurance policy restrictions. Having said that, based on your needs, whenever possible, we always strive to be flexible.

If you are below 25 years, try contacting your insurer to find out whether you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can contact us.

Can you accommodate adults who have kids?

Absolutely! Please note that with our rooftop camping vehicles you’ll have to climb up one small ladder. If this is a concern, we offer an additional tent with all of our packages which you could put up on the ground next to your camping truck. This can be much more comfortable for both you and your young children.

What is the max. capacity of your camping trucks?

We are able to accommodate 3 people at most, though if there are more within your party, we do have an extra camping tent, too. With this, we can easily accommodate about five people. Each of our trucks has 5 seatbelts.

Are you offering surfboards?

Absolutely yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards & boogie boards and also fins on request for a small fee. Just inform us beforehand if you want to rent one, so we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.

Do we get a guide or a map with the greatest hiking trails and beaches to visit on Kauai?

Certainly, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best locations to visit and go camping on Kauai.

Kauai Camping Guide & Information Regarding Camping Permits

Am I able to go to any beach to camp?

You could drive up to any beach, but you can only set up your camp in official camping grounds. This is the standard practice here on Kauai. We’ll give you a list of the greatest places to visit and also to camp in. Please be aware that driving on the beaches isn’t allowed on Kauai.

Is “wild camping” permitted or can we only go to official camping sites? If so, what is the charge?

No, wild camping is not allowed in Kauai. You can only camp in designated areas with a current camping permit. The associated fee is about $3 per night in most Kauai county campgrounds, though private campsites could be a bit more. The good thing about these campsites is that you will have complete access to amenities, such as showers, washrooms and picnic kitchen tables. Please be aware that if you opt to camp on the county campsites, you are only permitted to use the ground tent.

Prior to our arrival in Kauai, do we need to get a Kauai camping permit?

It is a good idea to organize your Kauai camping license before your journey. For most private campgrounds, which we always recommend first, you may get your licenses online and also on-the-spot in the respective office.

If you choose to camp at a county campground and use a ground tent, you can ask for permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” web page.

Non-residents need to pay 3 dollars per night up-front. Payment methods accepted with this application are money orders & cashier’s checks. Nevertheless, it’s not absolutely necessary to reserve your camping permits prior to your arrival. You can also obtain them at the designated permit offices in Kauai, which is usually easier.

How long does it take to get the camping permits?

If you choose to stay at a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you choose to stay at a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it can take quite some time to obtain your permits. Permits can be obtained at the license offices on Kauai upon arrival; in-person permits are given on-the-spot.
