Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the minimum age to rent from you?
We prefer to work with customers who are 25 years and above because of our insurance policy restrictions. Nevertheless, based on your circumstances, whenever possible, we strive to be accommodating.
In case you are below twenty-five, try checking with your insurer to see if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, and then call us.
Would you be able to accommodate families with kids?
Indeed! Please keep in mind that using our rooftop camping vehicles you’ll have to climb up one small ladder. If this is a problem, we provide an extra camping tent with each of our packages which you could set up on the ground. This could be much more comfortable for you and your young ones.
What is the maximum capacity of your trucks?
The camping trucks fit three individuals at most, although if there are more within your group, we do offer an additional tent, as well. With this, we can easily allow for as much as five individuals. All of our vehicles have 5 seatbelts.
Do you offer surfboards?
Certainly, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards & boogie boards and also fins upon request for a small fee. Just tell us up-front if you would like to rent one, so we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.
Do we get a guide book or a map with the nicest hiking trails and beaches to explore on Kauai?
Certainly, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best locations to visit & camp out on Kauai.
Perfect Places For Camping On Kauai & Camping Permits FAQ
Am I able to head to any beach for camping?
You could drive up to any beach, but you should only set up your camp in official camping grounds. This is the usual practice here on Kauai. We will supply you with a list of the best locations to visit and to go camping. Please note that driving a vehicle on the beaches isn’t allowed on Kauai.
Is “wild camping” permitted or can we just go to official camping sites? If so, what is the charge?
No, wild camping isn’t permitted in Kauai. You should only camp in specified areas with a valid camping permit. The associated fee is roughly $3 per night stay in many Kauai county parks, though private campsites could be a bit more. The good thing about these camping grounds is that you will have total access to amenities, such as showers, washrooms and picnic kitchen tables. Please be aware that if you opt to camp on the county campsites, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.

Do we have to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?
It is a better to get your Kauai camping permits prior to your trip. For the majority of private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you can get your permits on the internet and also in person in the respective office.
If you opt to stay at a county campsite and use a ground tent, you may obtain permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.
Non-residents need to pay three dollars per night beforehand. Payment methods accepted with this particular application are cashier’s checks as well as money orders. But you don’t necessarily have to reserve your camping licenses before your planned arrival. You could also obtain them at the various permit offices in Kauai, which is typically easier.
What is the processing time for getting camping permits?
Whether you choose to camp at a state or private campsite, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you choose to stay at a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it can take quite a while to get your permits. You might obtain your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the various permit offices on the island; in-person you will get them immediately.
