Frequently Asked Questions
Are there any age limits to rent from you?
We try to work with clients who are actually 25 years and above due to our insurance policy restrictions. Nevertheless, depending on your situation, whenever possible, we always try to be flexible.
In case you are below twenty-five, try checking with your insurance company to find out if you would be insured for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can call us.
Are your rooftop tents kids friendly?
Yes! Please note that with our rooftop camping vehicles you’ll have to climb up a small ladder. If this is an issue, we offer an additional tent with each of our packages which you could set up on the ground. This can be much more comfortable for you and your young children.
What is the max. capacity of your camper trucks?
We are able to fit three people at most, though if there are more within your group, we do offer an extra camping tent, as well. With this, we are able to allow for about five individuals. Each of our trucks has 5 seatbelts.
What about surfboards?
Yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers surfboards and boogie boards as well as fins upon request for a fee. Simply inform us up-front if you would like to rent one, so that we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.
Can we receive a guidebook or a map with the nicest hiking trails and beaches to check out on Kauai?
Certainly, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best places to visit and go camping on Kauai.
Kauai Camping Guide & Information About Camping Permits
Can I head to any beach front for camping?
You can drive up to any beach, but you can only set up your camp in official camping sites. Here on Kauai, this is the standard procedure. We will supply you with a list of the top places to visit and also to go camping. Please note that driving on the beaches is not permitted on Kauai.
Are we allowed to camp in the wild or can we only go to official camping grounds? If so, how much is the cost?
No, wild camping is not allowed on the island of Kauai. You should only go camping in specific areas with a valid camping permit. The fee is roughly $3 per night in the majority of Kauai county campgrounds, though private campsites could be a bit more. The good thing about these campsites is that you will have full access to amenities, including showers, restrooms and picnic dining tables. Please remember that if you choose to camp on the county campsites, you are only permitted to set up the ground tent.

Do we need to get Kauai camping permits before we arrive in Kauai?
It is a good idea to organize your Kauai camping license before your arrival. For most private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you can get your permits on the internet and also in person in the respective office.
If you decide to camp at a county campground and use a ground tent, you can obtain permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” web page.
Non-residents have to pay 3 dollars per night beforehand. Payment methods accepted with this application are cashier’s checks and also money orders. But you don’t have to reserve your camping permits before your planned arrival. You may also get them at the various permit offices on the island, which is usually easier.
What is the processing time for obtaining camping permits?
If you choose to stay at a state or private camping ground, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you decide to go to a county campsite, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it can take quite a while to obtain your permits. Permits can be obtained at the permit offices on Kauai once you have arrived; in-person permits are given immediately.
