Commonly Asked Questions

Is there an age requirement to rent from you?

We prefer to do business with clients who are 25 years and older because of our insurance coverage restrictions. Nevertheless, depending on your needs, whenever possible, we always try to be accommodating.

In case you are younger than 25 years, try contacting your insurer to see if you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can call us.

Are your roof top tent camping trucks family friendly?

Certainly! Please keep in mind that using our rooftop camping vehicles you’ll have to climb up a small ladder. If this sounds like a problem, we also offer an extra tent with every package which you could put up on the ground beside the camping vehicle. This can be more convenient for both you and also your kids.

How many people can your camper trucks accommodate?

We could accommodate 3 individuals maximum, though if there are more within your group, we do have an additional camping tent, as well. With this, we are able to accommodate up to five individuals. All of our vehicles have 5 seatbelts.

What about surfboards?

Yes, our company offers surfboards and boogie boards as well as fins upon request for a fee. Just inform us in advance if you would like to rent one, so we can add it to your reservation and have it ready for you at departure.

Do we receive a guide or even a map with the best hiking trails and beaches to visit on Kauai?

Yes, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best locations to check out and go camping on Kauai.

Ideal Spots For Camping Outdoors On Kauai & Information About Camping Permits

Am I able to visit any beach for camping?

You may drive up to any beach, however, you can only put up your camp in official camping grounds. Here on Kauai, this is the usual procedure. We’ll give you a list of the top locations to visit and also to go camping. Please remember that driving on the beaches isn’t permitted on Kauai.

Is “wild camping” permitted or are we only able to go to designated camping sites? If so, how much will it cost?

No, wild camping isn’t allowed in Kauai. You may only go camping in specified areas with secured camping permits. The charge is approximately $3 per night stay in most Kauai county parks, though private camping grounds could be a little more. One advantage of these campsites is that you have complete access to amenities, including showers, washrooms & picnic kitchen tables. Please be aware that if you decide to go camping on the county camp sites, you are only permitted to use the ground tent.

What camping grounds do you suggest with the rooftop tent?

  • Kōkeʻe State Park (need camping permit): Kokee Rd, Hwy 550, Kekaha, HI 96752
  • Sugi Grove Campground (need camping permit): Access from MohihiCamp 10 Road, starting 100 yards past Kōkeʻe State Park headquarters along Highway 550. Latitude 22.13 N, Longitude -159.622 W.

Do we have to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?

It is definitely a good idea to organize your Kauai camping permits before your trip. For the majority of private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you can secure your permits online and also on-the-spot in the designated office.

If you opt to camp at a county campground and set up a ground tent, you can ask for permits by going to the “County of Kauai Camping Information” web page.

Up-front, the charges are $3 per night for non-residents of Hawaii. Accepted payment methods with this application are cashier’s checks and also money orders. But it is not necessary to book your camping licenses before your planned arrival. You could also get them at the various permit offices on the island, which is typically easier.

How much time will it take to get the camping permits?

No matter if you choose to camp at a state or private camping ground, both online and in person reservations are possible. Please note that if you choose to stay at a county campground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, but it might take quite a while to obtain your permits. Permits can be bought at the license offices on Kauai once you have arrived; in-person permits are given right away.

We at Kauai Rooftop Campers are proud to serve the entire Garden Island Kauai – always with Aloha!

TESTIMONIALS

Our Happy Clients!

Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.

Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time

Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.

We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
