Frequently Asked Questions
Are there any age limits to rent from you?
We prefer to work with clients who are 25 years and above because of our insurance coverage restrictions. Nevertheless, based upon your circumstances, whenever possible, we always strive to be flexible.
In case you are below twenty-five, try checking with your insurer to find out whether you would be covered for rental vehicles, particularly for pick-up trucks, after which you can contact us.
Are your rooftop tents kids friendly?
Yes! Please keep in mind that using our rooftop campers you’ll have to climb up a small ladder. If this sounds like a concern, we also provide an extra tent with each of our packages which you could set up on the ground. This can be much more comfortable for both you as well as your young children.
What is the max. capacity of your trucks?
We can fit three individuals at most, though if there are more within your party, we do provide an extra tent, too. With this, we are able to allow for as much as five individuals. All of our trucks have 5 seatbelts.
Do you have surfboards?
Yes, Kauai Rooftop Campers offers both surfboards and boogie boards and also fins on request for a small fee. Just tell us in advance if you would like to rent one, so that we can add it to your booking and have it ready for you at departure.
Can we receive a guide book or even a map with the best hiking trails & beaches to visit on Kauai?
Certainly, each vehicle has a Kauai guidebook which details maps and information on the best places to check out and go camping on Kauai.
Ideal Spots For Camping Out On Kauai & Information Regarding Camping Permits
Can I go to any beach front for camping?
You may go to any beach, however, you can only put up your camp in designated camping sites. This is the usual practice here on Kauai. We will supply you with a list of the top locations to check out and to camp in. Please note that driving on the beaches isn’t permitted on Kauai.
Are we permitted to camp in the wild or are we only able to go to official camping sites? If so, how much does it cost?
No, wild camping is not allowed on the island of Kauai. You may only go camping in designated areas with secured camping permits. The fee is around $3 per night stay in many Kauai county campgrounds, though private camping grounds could be a bit more. The good thing about these campsites is that you have complete access to amenities, such as showers, restrooms & picnic tables. Please note that if you decide to camp on the county campsites, you are only allowed to use the ground tent.

Do we need to get Kauai camping permits before our arrival in Kauai?
It’s a good idea to obtain your Kauai camping license prior to your journey. For most private camping grounds, which we always recommend first, you may get your permits on the internet and also in person in the designated office.
If you opt to stay at a county campsite and set up a ground tent, you may ask for permits by visiting the “County of Kauai Camping Information” webpage.
Non-residents must pay 3 dollars per night in advance. Accepted payment methods with this application are money orders and cashier’s checks. However, you don’t have to book your camping permits before your planned arrival. You can also get them at the designated permit offices in Kauai, which is usually easier.
What is the processing time for getting camping permits?
If you decide to stay at a state or private campground, both online and in person reservations are possible. If you choose to go to a county camping ground, mail-in applications are easy to submit, however it might take quite some time to obtain your permits. You might choose to get your permits upon arrival to Kauai at the designated permit offices on the island; in-person you will get them right away.

Our Happy Clients!
Exploring Kauai with a rooftop camper is a fun and unique way to explore this beautiful island! Our family of 4 spent 12 fabulous days exploring and camping. The extra tent with the rooftop provided plenty of space for us…we had an amazing time! All communication with Jonathan and Jamie was smooth and easy. They are lovely people who genuinely want to provide a great experience.
Jamie and Jonathan were excellent hosts! Even though they were on vacation, Jonathan made all accommodations very easy and helped us with every step. Note: if you are under 25, make sure to let them know to make sure you are covered by insurance! Jonathan helped us work it out and we had a great time

Jamie and Jonathan are by far the very best experience with Airbnb we have ever had. Truly generous human beings with big hearts. They provided wonderful suggestions, amenities, and a wonderful 5 star experience. We will certainly rent again. For our first experience in Hawaii, they made sure it was second to none. If you’re coming to Hawaii to truly experience nature and looking for a ‘no nonsense’ and easy process to explore the island the way it was meant to be, you could not attain better hosts.
We had such an amazing trip with Jamie’s camper! Jamie and Jonathan were both so kind and took their time to explain to us the ins and out of our camper. Communication was easy and the beaches they recommend we visit were like paradise! Will rent again from them when we come back for sure!
The BEST way to experience the beautiful garden island! Not only a great service–transportation doubling as your lodging–but wonderful and warm hosts. Jonathan and Jamie were so kind and helpful. An absolutely wonderful trip to Kauai–thank you both!
